The only source for his name James is the 1820 census. Perhaps his name was Joseph James Monroe, or maybe the census taker just got the name wrong. Living next to Joseph in Warren, CT, in 1810 was Peter Osborn who also moved to Coventry, OH, and was listed on the same census page in Coventry in 1820.

The Warren, Connecticut, Vital records are sparse. There are no Monroes (of any spelling) listed in the records.

Either Joseph’s name was Joseph James Monroe, or the census taker simply wrote down James instead of Joseph. Neighbors on the census list: John Belton, Baralel Viers, John Estabrooks, James Monroe, Moses Wilson, Daniel Smith, William Wedge.

Joseph’s estate was administered 16 Sep 1822. Samuel Norton appointed administrator. Portage County Probate, case 44. Property appraisal by Barnabus Williams, Josiah W. Brown, George W. Sholes, after deducting one bedding for the widow and such provisions considered reasonable for herself and children (unnamed). The 1825 settlement paid debts, among others, to Lyman P. Osborn, Lorenzo Osborn, Amos Osborn, Miner Spicer, George W. Sholes. Inventory appraised 27 Sep 1822 by J.W. Brown, Barnabus Williams, and Georgw W. Sholes.

Coventry became part of Summit County in 1840.

Other Monroe families in Portage County are George Monroe’s and Samuel Monroe’s, both in Springfield, Portage County, right next to Coventry. They’re younger than James but could be brothers. Some sources list George and Samuel as sons of George & Sarah Monroe of Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania.
