Lieut. Jabez Pritchard enlisted July, 1777, in Capt. Carris’ Co., Col. Enos’ Regiment, who was in command of the guards at Horseneck which were afterwards transferred to Major Humphrey’s command, near Fort Independence. In the conflict at the fort he was taken prisoneer with others, confined first at Kingsbridge and afterwards on a prison ship in the North River. His commission was taken from him and he so brutally and inhumanly treated tht he lived but a short time, and died while on theprison ship that same year.
That he was a man of generous nature and bor an honorable character is evidenced from the fact that he might have escaped capture had he deserted a poor wounded comrade, which he would not an did not do. And when he saw his comrades dying about him for want of food, he divided his money with them, which act, says Capt. Bradford Steele, was the means by which his own life was saved.
