Crystaldale, Death of John Hitchcock, Sr., and Old and Esteemed Resident
It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of John Hitchcock. Sr., which occurred at his home at this place at 1:30 on Thursday, December 30th. Mr. Hitchcock had not been in the best of health for the past year, but had been able to do light work about the farm and that morning previous to his death had worked in his shop and finished mounting a deer's head. After dinner he complained to his wife of not feeling well and grew worse so rapidly that he expired before the neighbors that had been summoned arrived. Deceased was the son of Charlotte, and Luther Hitchcock, was born June 11th, 1842 and was the last surviving of six children, Jessie, Henry, Phebe, Julia and Eunice, three dying in infancy. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Clista Young, who died several years ago. To this union was born one son, who died twenty-eight years ago at the age of twenty-seven. January 10, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Vanghneaux, who survives with two sons, Kent E. and John, Jr. Mr. Hitchcock was a taxidermist and it has been of special interest in the past to visit his shop and note the fine collection of his work, which included many speciments [sic], from black bear to squirrels, besides many bucks' heads. By the death of Mr. Hitchcock the family will miss a kind husband and father; the community, where he has lived for the past forty-three years, a kind and obliging friend and neighbor.
The funeral was held at the Crystaldale church Sunday at 1 p. m., Rev. George Walker officiating. C. Fred Peckham. of Lowville, sang "Face to Face,'' and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." The bearers were Henry Edwards, Charles Wetmore, Charles Hill, Elmer Wilder, Adelbert Walker, Robert Tuft. Interment was made at the Beach's Bridge cemetery beside his son Leonard, who passed away twelve years ago last October.

John first married Clista Young.
On 10 Jan 1878 when John was 35, he second married Mary L. Vaughneaux. Born in May 1856 in New York.
