Spanish War Vet Dies at Facility

Durward B. Thompson, 75, died Sunday at Michigan Veterans Facility in Grand Rapids, after a long illness. His home address was 541 Elm Drive, Holland.
        He was born in Byron Center, October 22, 1876 to the late Mr. and Mrs. David Thompson. He served as a Sargeant in the Spanish American War, the Boxer Rebellion in China and later in the Phillipines.
        After returning to civilian life, he was in the lumber business in the Upper Penninsula. In 1916 the family moved to Holland where he engaged in the automobile business until eight years ago when he retired due to ill health. He was a member of the Unity Lodge 191, F and AM and Royal Arch Masons.
        Surviving are the wife Claudia; one son Kent of Central Park; one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Fairbanks of Los Angeles, California; two grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Sybil Hartman of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Alfred Ter Haar of Hudsonville; Mrs. Owen Barney of Carlisle, and one brother, J.W. of Grand Rapids.
