Death certificate, Charlotte County, Florida states that George I. Race died 15 July 1979.He was married to Minnie A. Gardow, was born in Michigan, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Port Charlotte, and was born 9 September 1894. His parents were Lester James Race and Anna Teresa Hennesay. He worked as a conductor on the railroad and lived at 749 NE Starlite Lane, Port Charlotte, Florida. Cause of death was cardiac failure as a consequence of Arteriosclerotic heart discease and carcinoma of the prostate with metastases. He was buried at Westlawn Memorial Gardens and Kays-Ponger Funeral Homes attended the funeral. HIs wife was the informant.

    George I. Race, 84, of 749 N.E. Starlite Lane in Port Charlotte died Sunday in a local hospital.
    He was a native of Grand Rapids, Mich. and came to the local area 17 1/2 years ago from Calumet City, Ill.
    He was retired from the New York Central Railroad after 51 years and was a veteran of World War I.
    He was a life member of the American Legion Memorial Post No. 330 in Ill., the World War I Barracks No. 714 in Port Charlotte, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen Lodge No. 962 in Cleveland, Ohio, the Retired Veteran Railway Employee’s’ Inc. Unit No. 112 of Port Charoltte, the Port Charlotte Civic Association, the Illinois Club of Port Charlotte and the BPOE (Elks) Lodge No. 2153 of Port Charlotte.
    He is survived by his widow, Minnie A. Race of Port Charlotte; a son, Norman Race of Chicago; a brother-in-law, Walter Wiles of Punta Gorda; and two grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be private. The Port Charlotte Chapel of the Kays-Ponger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
George Irving first married Wilhelmina A. Gadow, daughter of Wilhelm Friedrich Gadow (29 Oct 1860-20 Feb 1936) & Anna Schmidt (5 Jul 1864-8 Feb 1953). Born on 2 Nov 1900 in Germany. Wilhelmina A. died in Port Charlotte, Charlotte County, Florida, on 15 Jan 1988; she was 87. Buried in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

In a Wed, 7 Feb 2001 email Georgina Race includes two copies of obituaries for George's second wife Wilhelmina (Minnie) Gardow. The two newspaper clippings of Minnie's obituaries tell a little more about her, it is unknown which papers these were taken from but they appear to be a local Port Charlotte, FL newspaper.  The first one is dated Friday, January
27, 1989, it reads:
 
"Minnie A. Race, 88
  Port Charlotte- Minnie A. Race, 88, of 749 N.E. Starlite Lane, Port Charlotte, died Jan. 15 at her home.  She was born in Germany and came to this area 26 years ago from Illinois.
  Mrs. Race was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, Port Charlotte; a charter member and past president of the NARVE unit 113, Port Charlotte; past president of the World War I Auxiliary 937, Hammond, IN.; a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary No. 16 of Hammond, IN.; a member of the Auxiliary of Veterans of World War I, Barracks No. 714, Port Charlotte; member and past president of the Charlettes, Elks Lodge No. 2153, Port Charlotte; the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union, Justice Lodge No. 419, Hammond Indiana.
Survivors include her son, Norman Race, Port Charlotte; one brother, Herman Gardow of Maynard, Iowa; and two grandchildren. Paul Schelm Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements."

Obituary: An email from Georgina Race on Wed, 7 Feb 2001 <grace1@tampabay.rr.com> regards George's brother Edwin L. Georgina asked, “One thing I thought was neat was the line that said he was an accomplished musician, I wonder what he played and/or did that made him considered "accomplished".
  An obituary in either a Hammond, IN or Port Charlotte, FL newspaper, The Herald News, tells more about Edwin.  It reads:
"The Herald News Monday, Jan. 11, 1971
  Edwin L. Race
 Hammond, IN.-Edwin L. Race, 75, of 161 N.E. Midway Blvd., Port Charlotte, died Saturday (Friday) in St. Margarets Hospital in Hammond, IN.  He came to Port Charlotte nine years ago from Lansing, IL.  He was a retired railway conductor for the NY Central Railroad; a member of the Port Charlotte Civic Association; an accomplished musician; a member of American Federation of Musicians Local 730; Retired Railroad Club Unit 13; World War I Barracks 714; Loyal Order of Moose 2121; and Illinois Club all of Port Charlotte.  He attended the First Christian Church of Port Charlotte.
    He is survived by his widow, Louise Race; one daughter; four step-daughters; and several grandchildren all residing in the Chicago area; and one brother, George of Port Charlotte.
Burial will be in Hammond, IN today.
    The funeral services were announced through Kays Funeral Home, Port Charlotte."
 
The parenthesis around Friday at the beginning of the article indicates that the article had been read Saturday, but Minnie wrote over it saying it was Friday.
