The “Saranac History and Directory, 1941,”
provides a brief “Race Family” history.

“In December, 1898, the Race family joined the permanent residents of Saranac when Charles H. Race bought the D. J. Hill & Sons Feed and Cider mill and moved his wife and four daughters from Croton, where he had been in business, to their new home here.
Within a year he purchased the partially built house on the corner of Dewitt and Pleasant streets of F. E. Stowell and made a comfortable home, planting maple trees and seeding the lawn as well as remodeling the house. The mill property had been closed for several years and required renovating and modernizing. This work Mr. Race did and built up an extensive and progressive business. He was assisted by his uncle, Morgan Race, who also made his home with the family.
They were socially active in the Maccabees, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and attended the Congregational church. The four daughters -- Ethel, Hazel, Lelia and Florence -- are graduates of the local high school. Mr. Race passed away in November, 1916, after which the business was carried on by Morgan Race until his death a year later. Mrs. Race then sold the mill to Lewis Kelly. Later he closed out the stock and machinery, razed the building and sold the land to the village which has since been used for a WPA storage building and later an ice skating rink was constructed for use of all skaters during the winter season.
Mrs. Race sold the old home in 1924 and purchased the four-family apartment house on Church street where she is living at the present time. Ethel was clerk in the post office for ten years, before her marriage to Fred Dillenbeck, now of Grand Rapids. Hazel was employed in the Advertiser office for several years as printer and linotype operator, and is now the wife of Glen P. Tower, a Saranac rural letter carrier. Lelia made teaching her profession, later marrying Earl Goss, recently discharged soldier, who is plant chief of the Michigan Bell Telephone company at Charlevoix. Florence took up stenography and held an important position with Packard Motor company during the World War, and at the close of the war became the bride of Elmer Hill, discharged from the US Navy, and now an auditor of the Standard Oil Co. They reside in Saranac, having purchased the Dr. H.H. Power’s house for their home.”

Obituary, dated 12 Nov 1951: WILLIAM E. RACE, 93, RAILROAD VETERAN, DIES
William E. Race, 93, resident of Grand Rapids most of his life, a retired railroad man, died Saturday in Henderson hospital in Lansing where he had lived the last few years with a son, Shelby E. Race.
Mr. Race was born in New York city and came to Grand Rapids as a youth. He lived here at 15 Pleasant St. SW. He was a member of the GR&I Veterans society.
