Norman Hamelink, age 78, of Pierson, formerly of Grand Rapids, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 10, 2014. He was born July 20, 1935 in Newaygo, the son of Raymond and Eileen (Murray). He started his young life on the high banks of the Big Muskegon River where he lived with his maternal grandmother in a small cabin. He learned to tell fish stories at a very young age. Norm proudly served in the National Guard and the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Blue. He then worked for the United States Post Office as a carrier and an LSM Operator, retiring in 1990 as a member of management. After traveling, he volunteered two years for the Grand Rapids Police Department Senior Volunteers, checking on the welfare of several senior neighbors, soon becoming their friend as he treated them like family. Norm was a loving and faithful husband to his wife, Beatrice, of 55 years. Also surviving are their children, Norman, Jr. (Phyllis Douglas), Jacquelyn Palasek, Nanette (Ernie) Cole, Beverly Hamelink and Anna Marie (Brian) Bearinger, along with seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and man's best friend, Sasha, their dog; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Tursky, Donna Yowaish, Barbara Yowaish, Dottie Yowaish; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Terry Lee, Raelynn, his in-laws, Mary and John Yowaish (with whom he shared a humorous relationship), Phillip, John (Dorothy), Billy, Lorraine (John) Curte, Mary Alice (Joseph) Bancevich and Bernard Tursky. He spent his last few years battling COPD and in the end, lost his epic battle with cancer. As per Norm's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Norm's life will take place on Saturday, January 25, from 5-8 PM at The Elks Lodge, 2715 Leonard St. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.
