801. Saint Edward the Martyr. Born ca 963. Edward died on 18 Mar 978 in Corfe, Dorset.
Edward was king of England from 975 to 978 (and succeeded by his brother Ethelred the Unready. He was murdered at Corfe, and his body was removed to Shaftesbury. Miracles occurred at Shaftesbury and he was regarded as a saint and martyr.

Ethelred (also spelled Æthelred) II, King of England from 978 to 1016, called Ethelred the Unready (“unraed” meaning evil council, that is, he made poor decisions). He ascended the throne after his half brother King Edward the martyr was assassinated in Mar 978. He was a weak king who reigned at the height of Danish power. The Danish invasions resumed in 980. In 1002 Ethelred began a massacre of Danish settlers. When the Danish king Sweyn had control of England at the end of 1013, Ethelred fled to Normandy. He was restored after Feb 1014 when Sweyn died. He was succeeded by his son Edmund Ironside. Later one of his other sons ruled England as Edward the Confessor from 1042 to 1066.

In 1002 Æthelred II, King second married Emma of Normandy (844) , daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy (679) (28 Aug 933-20 Nov 996) & Gunnora de Crepon (ca 950-ca 1031). Born ca 982/984 in Normandy, France. Emma died on 21 Feb 1052 in Winchester, England. Buried in St Martin's Church, Winchester.
