Philip, Count of Valois, became Philip VI the Pious, King of France, in 1328 upon the death of his cousin Charles IV, and was crowned 29 May 1328. His other titles included Count of Alençon 1293, Count of Maine 1315, and Count of Valois 1326. He reigned until his death in 1350, but the Hundred Years War with England began with his ill treatment of Charles IV’s nephew, King Edward III of England, who had a claim to the French throne.
