2115.Edward Bulkeley. Born ca 1614 in Odell, Hinwick, Bedfordshire. Edward was baptized in Odell, Hinwick, Bedfordshire, on 12 Jun 1614.6 Edward died in Chelmsford, MA 2 Jan 1695/6.6 Buried in Concord, MA. Education: St Catherine’s College, Cambridge, 1629.14
Edward Bulkeley matriculated pensioner from St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, Easter, 1629. He arrived at New England before his father and the rest of his family. He was at that time barely 21 years old. He joined the First Church in Boston 22 Mar 1634/5, and was made a freeman on 6 May 1635. Edward was dismissed to Concord, 15 Aug 1641. Having acquired a professional education, under instruction of his father, he was licensed to preach the Gospel and ordained at Marshfield, MA, in 1642/3. On the death of his father in 1659, he was dismissed and installed over the Church in Concord as his successor at £80 a year. He preached the Election Sermon in 1680.
On 5 Mar. 1694, the town of Concord voted, “Whereas the Rev. Pastor, Mr Edward Bulkeley, is under such infirmities of body by reason of great age, that he is not capable of attending the work of the ministry as in time past, being also sensible of the obligations the town is under to afford him a comfortable maintenance during the term of his natural life, that thereby the people may testifie their gratitude for his former services in the Gospel, they do hereby oblige the town to pay Mr. Bulkeley yearly, during his natural life, the sum of £30 in lieu of his former salary.” He accepted this provided he could preach or not as he felt inclined.
Sewall’s diary, 4 Jan 1695/6: “The Revd. Mr. Edward Bulkly, of Concord, dies at Chelmsford in a good old Age; is buried at Concord.”6

The wife of Rev. Edward Bulkeley was a widow named Lucian, who apparently was from Plymouth Colony. She had, by her former husband, a daughter Lucy who married Mr. John Lake. Suffolk County Court Records. “It is ordered that the Administrators to the Estate of Mrs Lucy Lake bring in an Accot. of that Estate to the Clerke of the Court and that they pay in the balance that is in their hands unto her mother Mrs Lucy Anna Bulkeley (Mr Edwd. Bulkeley her Husband giving a receipt to the Clerke for the same) to remain in her hands until some other person may make a better claim to it.” 28 Jan. 1678 [1678/9]. Suffolk Probate Records. Administration on the estate of Mrs. Lucey Lake late of Boston, widow, (relict of Mr John Lake) deceased intestate (formerly granted unto Deacon Henry Alline, Deacon Peter Bracket and Mr John Haywood, overseers, of her Husbands will in right of those to whom it should legally appear to belong) is transferred unto Peter Bulkeley, Her Brother, 10 Mar. 1679/80.
Rev. Edward Bulkeley’s receipt, dated 10 Apr 1679, in behalf of his wife Lucey Anna Bulkeley for the sum of sixty pounds, eight shillings, from the estate of Lucy Lake, widow, was witnessed by Thomas Clarke and Jane Bulkeley [his son-in-law and daughter].6

Thomas was freeman, Mar 1638/9. After his marriage to Sarah, daughter of Rev. John Jones, he removed from Concord, MA, with Rev. Jones to Fairfield, CT.150
The inventory of the estate of Thomas, dated 4 Jun 1658, mentions his widow, two sons, and daughters; children under age. Overseers, Mr. Hill and Mr. Hull.6
Ca 1638 Thomas married Sarah Jones, daughter of Rev. John Jones (ca 1594-9 Feb 1664/5) & Sarah (ca 1601-ca 1650).68 Born ca 1620 in England.68 Sarah died in Fairfield, CT ca 1682.6

Sarah Jones was listed as aged 15 when she sailed on the Defense in 1635 with her father, Rev. John Jones, and his family.
The will of Sarah Wilson, “sometimes Sarah Bulkley,” dated 26 Apr 1677, codicil 15 Feb 1680, proved 2 Jan 1683, mentions daughter Sarah wife of Eliazer Browne of New Haven, daughter Rebecca wife of Joseph Whelplie of Fairfield, daughter Hannah, sisterin-law Mr. Eliphalet Jones’ wife, sister Elizabeth Hill, two sons John and Joseph Bulkley. Brother-in-law Mr Gershom Bulkeley of Wethersfield and Samuel Wakeman, overseers. Witnesses, Gershom Bulkley and Israell Chancy.6

“He was graduated from Harvard College in the first graduatmg class, 1642; returned to England, where he became minister at Fordham, co. Essex. He was ejected in 1662, following the Restoration; removed to Wapping in the suburbs of London and practiced as a physician until his death.
“‘He was a learned and eminently Pious Man. His whole Life was a continual Sermon. Tho’ he was not often in the Pulpit, yet he might truly be said to Preach every Day in the Week. And seldom did he visit his Patients, without reading a Lecture of Divinity to them, and praying with them.’
“‘That which gave a Lustre to all his other Vertues, was his great Humility, the constant Sweetness of his Temper, Integrity of his Mind, and Charitableness of his Nature, which appear’d in every part of his Life.’
“Mr. Bulkeley, by deed dated 20 Dec. 1645, gave to Harvard College his portion of a garden containing over an acre in Cambridge, on Harvard Street, which became the College yard.
“His will, made 11 Oct. 1689, proved 28 Jan. 1689/90, calls him of St. Katherine’s (near the Tower, London), gentleman; referred to land at Ringshall, co. Suffolk, settled upon me and my heirs; wife Avis, referring to a pre-nuptial settlement; daughter Elizabeth wife of Everard Falkener, grocer; sister Mrs. Elenor Trye; brother and sister Vicaridge and their children; the eldest son of my late nephew Trye Vicaridge; three brethren in New England, Edward, Gershom and Peter; sons of deceased brother Thomas; nephew Edward Bulkeley here in England; nephew Thomas Trye, son of late brother-in-law, Mr. William Trye; my two sons, Edward and Thomas.”
On 19 Mar 1650 John first married Anne Trye, daughter of Thomas Trye & Ursula [Trye], in Odell, Hinwick, Bedfordshire.6 Anne died prob. bef. 1665.6

Daniel came to New England with his father and lived in Concord. Later he joined his brother Thomas in Fairfield where he was granted six acres, which he willed to Thomas Bulkeley.6
