Next in prominence to Thomas Prence of the early settlers of Nausett [Eastham], was his son-in-law, John Freeman. He was the youngest son of Edmund Freeman, the Sandwich settler, adn was born in England. He came over with his father’s family when a lad, in the ship Abigail, Captain Hackwell, in 1635. Upon his marriage with Mercy, Gov. Prence’s daughter by wife Patience Brewster, Feb. 13, 1649-50, he removed from Sandwich to that parat of Nausett called Namskeeket, now within the limits of Orleans
John came to New England in 1635 on the ship Abigail and settled in the Orleans part of Eastham, MA; freeman 5 Jun 1651. He was deputy to Colony Court in 1653 and many years thereafter. In 1657 he was an assistant to the Governor and re-elected yearly till the union of the Colonies in 1692. Was one of the first selectmen of Eastham and many years a deacon of the church. Was captain of the militia and in 1685 was appointed Major.
