The multitude of Matthew Gannetts in Scituate is confusing.
A Matthew Gannet Jr of Scituate was charged in Dec 1701 “to have gotten with child by fornication Mary Bacon” of Hingham. It appears that in 1701 this Matthew Gannett, age 16, was the second oldest living Matthew Gannet in Scituate, his father being the eldest. His cousin Matthew, son of Joseph, was age 13 at that time.
In Jun 1702 Mary Bacon was fined for “having a bastard child lately begotten and born of her body by fornication”, and Matthew Gannett Jr. was ordered to pay maintenance on bastard child of Mary Bacon of Hingham. Matthew Gannett married Mary Bacon seven years later in 1708.
After Matthew’s father died in 1703, he would have been promoted to Matthew Sr, while his cousin Matthew, three years younger, would have been promoted to Matthew Jr. Apparently both Matthews married women named Mary. This Matthew married Mary Bacon, then Mary Neal, while his cousin married Mary Chapin.
Matthew died in his 53d year.52,507
