    When a young man James went to Cambridge, where he obtained employment in market gardening. Upon the death of Lieut. Jesse Butters, Jesse’s widow, Betsey (Cutler) Butters, engaged James to take charge of her farm. He married the widow Betsey (Cutler) Butters Dec. 13, 1798. The marriage brought James into possession of the old homestead of Samuel Butters, which had been handed to each succeeding generation, and now passes out of the ownership of the old family line.
    James Butters died Nov. 8, 1831, intestate. Real and personal property valued at $2,462.38.
On 13 Dec 1798 when James was 21, he married Betsey Cutler (63846) , daughter of Nathaniel Cutler (58398) (6 Sep 1748-17 Oct 1813) & Elizabeth Bennett (5 Nov 1751-6 Oct 1847), in Wilmington, MA.399 Born ca 1770. Betsey was baptized in Burlington, MA, on 10 Mar 1770.551 Betsey died in Wilmington, MA on 1 May 1830.164

    Betsey (Cutler) Butters died May 1, 1830, age 61, and upon her death a partition was made of the estate, and of her dower right the six children by her first husband and the four by her second marriage had an equal share.

    Joshua, went to Boston when a young man, and followed the occupation of currier; also surveyor of wood and bark. He enlisted in Capt. Thadeus Paige’s company. Col. Amos Benney’s Regiment, 1st brigade 3d regiment, ist division Massachusetts Militia, Sept. 12, 1814, for one month's service in Boston. He resided on Prince street, and attended the Unitarian Church.
On 1 Jun 1806 Joshua married Susanna Peters, daughter of Israel Peters.164 Susanna died in Aug 1824.164
