    Josiah served in the Revolutionary War as Private in Captian Elijah Cushing’s Co. of Minutemen in 1775; also as Sergeant in Capt. James Hatch’s Co. 1776; also Captain 5th (Pembroke) Co., 2nd Plymouth Co. Regt. the same year. In 1778 he raised a company in Pembroke, Duxbury and Marshfield, which was employed on guard duty in the fort at Nantasket.
On 26 Feb 1769 when Josiah was 27, he first married Deborah Cushing (55677) , daughter of John Cushing (40676) (16 Aug 1722-1 Jun 1798) & Deborah Barker (40507) (say 1723-1 Jun 1763), in Scituate, MA.110 Born on 20 Jan 1748 in Scituate, MA.52 Deborah died in Pembroke, MA, on 10 Apr 1773; she was 25.52

Josiah and Deborah were double half first cousins once removed; his father and her paternal grandfather were half brothers; also his father and her paternal grandmother were siblings.

Hawke and Ruth were second cousins; their paternal grandfathers were brothers.
On 28 Sep 1769 when Ruth was 22, she married Hawke Cushing (52175) , son of Dea. Joseph Cushing (35281) (21 Nov 1711-2 Jan 1767) & Lydia King (35328) (26 Dec 1716-), in Pembroke, MA.52 Born on 13 Feb 1744 in Scituate, MA.52 At the age of 1, Hawke was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, on 17 Feb 1745.335 Hawke died in Scituate, MA, on 16 Feb 1825; he was 81.52 Buried in South Parish Cemetery, Norwell. Occupation: carpenter.

Hawke was a carpenter and builder, and owner, with his brother Pickles, of the old Bryant Saw Mill on the Second Herring Brook, which they operated.42

Hawke was a private in the Revolutionary War.2
