Samuel, of Hingham, “was an officer in the French and Indian War, and was present at the massacre after the capitulation of Fort William Henry in 1757. He was tied to a tree, awaiting a horrible death at the hands of the savages, when French officers passing by took pity on him and cut his bonds. He made his escape to Fort Edward, while in the meantime the new of his horrible fate had been carried to Hingham by another escaped soldier. On a certain Sunday, Rev. Ebenezer Gay of Hingham preached his funeral sermon. On the following day a neighbor met Major Thaxter riging into town, and exclaimed in amazement, ‘Great Heavens, major! Is that you? What, we’ve just buried you!’”42
On 18 Aug 1743 when Samuel was 19, he married Abigail Smith (31448) , daughter of Samuel Smith (18 Jan 1687/8-aft 1740) & Bethia Chipman (14183) (11 Dec 1699-).45 Born on 16 Dec 1722 in Sandwich, MA.45 Abigail died in Hingham, MA, on 21 Aug 1807; she was 84.45
