John seems to have moved around a lot. In 1850 he was in Orleans County in the western part of New York between Buffalo and Rochester, in 1860 in Montgomery County in the Mohawk Vally west of Schenectady, and in 1870 in Dutchess County, not far from where he started. (The 1840 census record appears to be missing.)
