Towns in southern Columbia County
In 1786 the southeast part of Albany County was separated to form Columbia County, just in time for the 1790 federal census.
At the time the southern third of Columbia County was the town of Livingston except a small portion along the Hudson river which was Germantown. In 1787 a portion of Livingston was separated to form the town of Clermont.
The 1790 town of Livingston included not just the present town of Livingston, but also the present towns of Gallatin, Taghkanic, Ancram, and Copake.
In 1803 Livingston was divided into three parts, the western portion remained Livingston and is the present town of Livingston, the southeast portion became Gallatin (including the present Gallatin and Ancram), and the northeast portion became Granger (including the present Tagkankic and Copake).
In 1814 Gallatin was renamed Ancram and Granger renamed Tagkanic. In 1824 Copake was separated from Tagkanic, and in 1830 Gallatin was separated from Ancram. These towns have remained the same since.
The village of Churchtown
Churchtown is on the boundary of the town of Claverack to the north and Livingston and Taghkanic to the south. With the divisions of towns, name changes, and overlapping areas, neighbors in Churchtown could be found among the census records of Claverack, Livingston, Granger, and Taghkanic.
