The 1873 Columbia County Atlas shows the Estate of K.A. Smith in district number 1 of Taghkanic on the northeast part of town, about a mile northwest of Copake Lake and about a mile southwest of Craryville. Taghkanic Creek, also called Copake Creek passes through the property. The house is on Copake Lake Road, or Copale Lake Road Exd, off County Road 11. The land is still mainly farmland, though parts of it are wooded. According to Ellis’ History of Columbia County,608 this is the land leased by George (Yerry) Smith in the mid 1700s, purchased by George’s grandson Adam Smith and his son Killian A. Smith in 1838. The land passed to Killian’s son John L. Smith who was living there in 1900.
