The will of Matthew Borden of Headcorn [co. Kent], yeoman dated 26 September 1620. To the poor of Headcorn, at my burial, 20s. To my wife Joan two beds and a bedstead, with all things belonging, in the inner chamber over the hall, and the bed and bedstead, with furniture belonging, in lhe next chamber, wherein I now lie, and a fourth part of all the rest of my household goods, except my bedding, which is to be equally divided, and £8 a year out of my farm called Sim Harnden’s, in Smarden, Kent, in the tenure of Edward Watts, broadweaver, until my son John reaches the age of twellty-one years, and after that £4 a year for life to my said wıfe, the rent of my houses in Headcorn, wherein Zacharias Elye dwells doring her life, the rent of my farm called Grinnett, in Headcorn, in the occupation of Robert Marrance, for her life, and the rent of the tenement where Robert Jones dwells, until my son Edward is twenty-one years old. To my daughter Amye Borden £60 out of my Smarden lands, in the occupation of James Rich, butcher, at twenty years of age or marriage, to be paid by my son William, one of my executors. To my daughter Amye a feather bed, with a bedstead and furniture belonging thereto. To my daughter Mary Borden, wife of Jolm Rowe, £16 promised at her marriage. To my son Edward £40, at twenty-one years of age, and two houses and land, etc., one in Headcorn, in the occupation of Zacharias Elye aforesaid, the other in the den of Blechenden, in the tenure of Robert Jones, sawyer. To my son Edward a feather bed and a bedstead, with furniture thereto belonging, three pewter platters, three pewter dishes, a brass pot, and a brass kettle. To my son John Borden my house and lands called Sym Harnden’s, in Smarden. To my son John a like gift of personalty and £10, at twenty-one years of age. To my daughter Amye a dozen of pewter, a brass pot, a brass kettle, and a spit. To Tomson Cuery, my servant, 10s. To my son Richard my two houses and land in Hedcorn, in the tenure of Gcorge Brett and Robert Marrannte. To my son William £40, towards the performance of my daughter Amye’s marriage money, to be paid out of my goods before a division is made. To my son William Borden my house and land in Smarden, in the tenure of James Riche, and William is to pay to my wife, his mother, £5 per year for life.
