James was born in the Russell house at ‘the green bush.’ Before 1716 he resided on the main road in the South Parish, northwest of Wilson Hill. In 1725 James purchased from his neighbor Dea. George King lands in Ashford, CT, that had one been in the possession of James’ father and his uncle Capt. John Briggs.42
On 7 May 1713 James first married Elizabeth Garrett (14787) , daughter of Joseph Garrett (5325) (10 Mar 1648/9-19 Jul 1714) & Ruth Buck (7830) (ca 1653-aft 26 Dec 1717), in First Parish Church of Scituate.52 Born on 14 Aug 1686 in Scituate, MA.52 Elizabeth died in Scituate, MA, on 28 Dec 1715; she was 29.52

Widow Anna and widower James Briggs both had property and grown children when their marriage was contemplated, and they entered into a prenuptutal contract which is referred to in James’ will.42
