“He lived in Mt. Carmel Parish, the north part of Hamden, Conn., originally a part of New Haven. That he owned land in Mt. Carmel Parish is shown from two deeds. ‘Oct. 1, 1771: Samuel Hitchcock of New Haven to his father Samuel Hitchcock of the same place, lot in Mt. Carmel Parish, 2 1/4 acres, at S. W. corner of lot on which his house stands which his father gave him.’ ‘Oct. 3, 1771, Samuel Hitchcock of New Haven to his son David Hitchcock for love, etc., piece of land in Mt. Carmel Parish, viz. 1 2/4 a. one lately conveyed to him by his son Samuel, Jr., part bounded by his own, etc.’ On Probate records Aug. 4, 1788, when his will was administered on, he is called Samuel Hitchcock of Hamden.”409

    John Alling’s will was made March 12, 1761, four days before his death, and was presented in the Probate Court 1st Monday in April, 1762, by his widow, who accepted the trust May 17, 1762. The will in substance is:
    First, gives his wife, Abiah Alling, one-third of his movable estate, and the use of one-third of all the rest. Second, gives to his eldest son Stephen Ailing fifteen pounds lawful money over and above an equal share with his brothers. All the rest he gives to his eight children in this proportion: To each of my three sons one whole share, and to each of my five daughters one half share, that is to each son 1/11 and to each daughter 1/11. Lastly appoints his honored father Jonathan Alling executor and wife Abiah executrix.

    On the 3d January, 1763, the estate was distributed as follows: Stephen Ailing, 77 lbs. 18 s., to Ebenezer and John, each 62 lbs. 19 s., and each of the 5 daus. 31 lbs. 9 s. 3 d.
