Samuel drowned while boating with his brother Benjamin on the Penobscot River. They were conveying wood from the shore to a coasting vessel. “Benjamin recovered the body of his brother and set sail immediately, and under those solemn and trying circumstances, alone navigated the vessel safely back to Scituate.”131
