Jefferson County is on the east side of Ohio next to Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It was one of the earlier counties in Ohio created in 1797 formed from the first county in Ohio, namely Washington, which itself was created in 1788 as the original county of the Northest Territory. In 1804 Jefferson County included what are now Harrison and Carroll Counties. Ohio became a state in 1803.

    George Black, d. 1846, æ. 66y 11m 16d

Also buried there is
    “Elizabeth wife of George Black died May 3, 1817 ag’d 63yrs 23dys”
She would have been born 1754, possibly this George’s mother in which case his father would also be named George. Either that, or the stonecarver put “wife of George Black” instead of mother of George Black. The stone may have been relocated to this cemetery since no other stone is dated before 1835. According to Mrs. Robert N. Ungerer’s Our Illustrious Shaffer, Shafer Family, the graveyard wasn’t created until 1840.
Alternatively, the year of death was 1847 as the stone is hard to read. In that case Elizabeth (Friend) Black was born 11 Mar 1784 and died 3 May 1817.

Will: The will of George Black of Green Township was dated 2 Nov 1846 and probated 12 Dec 1846, Ashland County. The will was produced in court by witnesses David Cipher and Daniel Bittinger. It appointed his wife Elizabeth Black as sole executor who was willed the farm of 40 acres and the property on it, and she was to dispose and divide the property. Also mentioned was his son Daniel Black who would receive a horse.
