Obituary
    Samuel Friend died at the home of his son Clyde B. Friend near Bloomfield Monday afternoon at about 3:30 Mr. Friend a sufferer from heart trouble became very ill from a attack of the grip which proved too much for the weakened condition of the heart.
    Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. G.E. Purdy. Internment made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. The pallbearers were John Barker, Silas Kennedy, Evan Evans, D.E. Bradbury, Muss Saner and Jno Dunfrund. Deceased is the grandfather of Ed Jones of Bloomfield.
    Samuel Friend was born March 30,1834, at Ashland, Ohio. When only a boy of eleven he came to Iowa with his parents and located in Davis county where the family lived continuously. Only one year of this time was spent away from the Davis county home and that time was spent by the deceased in Illinois. Mr. Friend was married to Sarah Hopkins September 14, 1854, who died February 25, 1908,8 children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. The six surviving are Mary Jones, Pulaski, I?? Johanna Huff, Lincoln, Neb., Wm Friend, Burbank, Calif., Carrie Poe, West Grove, IA., and Clide and Tide residing near Bloomfield, Iowa. He was a member of the Christian church confessing faith in Christ in early life. He lived a sincere Christian life and when death came he was leaning on the everlasting arm. Since the death of his companion he made his home with his two sons living near Bloomfield the last four years at the home of his son Clyde where he died Monday January 25th, 1915 at the ripe old age of 80 years, 9 months and 25 days. 
On 14 Sep 1854 when Samuel was 20, he married Sarah Hopkins, daughter of Joseph Hopkins (19 Mar 1817-8 Sep 1897) & Aseneth, in Davis County, Iowa. Born on 10 Oct 1836 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. Sarah died in Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa, on 25 Feb 1908; she was 71. Buried in Bloomfield South Cemetery, Cleveland Township.

Obituary.
    Sarah Hopkins, daughter of Joseph and Aseneth Hopkins was born in Bartholomew county, Indiana, Oct.10, 1835, and departed this life at her home in Bloomfield, Iowa, Feb 25, 1906, at 3 o'clock in the morning, age 71 years, 4 months and 15 days. She was married to Samuel Friend sept 14, 1854. To this union was born eight children, five girls and three boys- two daughters having proceeded their mother to the other shore. A sorrowing husband, three daughters and three sons survive her. The surviving daughters are: Mrs. Elberta Jones of Pulaski; Mrs Johanna Duff of Lincoln Nebraska; Mrs Carrie Poe, of St Joseph, Mo. The sons: Clyde B and Tida C. Friend of Davis County, and Wm. D. Friend of Burbank,California- all but Wm D. was present at the funeral. Mrs Friend confessed Christ early in life. She united with the Christian church at the Star school house, under the ministry of Wright and Jordon. She later placed her membership at Pulaski and about five years ago transferred her membership to Bloomfield where she was called to her reward. Whe was a good, kind mother, a true christian and beloved by all who knew her. she was thoughtful of the welfare of her friends an d self sacrificing for her children. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Ferrull at the Christian church Wednesday, Feruary 26, at 11:30 and Interment was made in the I.O.O.F cemetery. Another mother is at rest.
