51783. Mathyas Van Tassel. Born in 1747. Mathyas was baptized in Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church, on 26 Jul 1747.157 Matyas, son of Jacobus Van Tessel [& Elizabeth Fosuer], witnesses Matyas Fosuer & wife [Elizabeth’s parents]. Mathyas died in Elmsford, Westchester County, New York bef 1790.

From the Genealogy of the Van Texel–Van Tassel Family:291
    Mathyas lived on the road leading from the present Elmsford to Tarrytown. The home was situated on the north side of the road and about a half mile west of Elmsford.

That’s probably just where the entrance to the Cross Westchester Expressway, I 287, is located on West Main Street/White Plains Road.
On 30 Mar 1771 Mathyas married Elizabeth Storm (61803) , daughter of Peter Storm (52554) (1721-) & Rachel Bankert (ca 1725-), in Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church.157 Metys Van Tessel, j.m., and Elisabeth Storm, widow of Metys Canckelie. Born in 1746. Elizabeth was baptized in Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church, on 5 Jul 1746.157 Eliesabet, daughter of Petrus Storm, witnesss Dirck Storm & wife [grandparents].

Elizabeth first married Mathias Conklin, second Mathyas Van Tassel.

51784. Sara Van Tassel. Born in 1749. Sara was baptized in Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church, on 30 Aug 1749.157 Sara, daughter of Jacobus Van Tessel, witnesses Johannis Gardeneer & wife [Sara Van Tassel, Jacobus’s sister]. Sara died aft 1792.

Based on the litigation after her brother Cornelius’ death, Sara first married a Mr Van Der Werken, second a Mr Hamilton.291
51785. Polly Van Tassel. Born ca 1751. Polly was baptized in Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church, on 8 Oct 1751.157 Marytye, daughter of Jacobus Van Tessel, witnesses Frans Pue & his wife [Maria Van Tessel, Jacobus’s half sister]. Polly died aft 1809.

Maritje also called Maria and Polly, Van Tassel.
Polly married John J. Smith (49808) , son of Johann Georg Schmidt (32944) (8 Aug 1712-) & Anna Barbara Minckler (32930) (ca 1718-). Born on 23 Oct 1746 in Taghkanic, Columbia County, New York.427 John J. was baptized in Rhinebeck Lutheran Church, on 7 Dec 1746.427 Johannes, son of George Schmid & Barbara, witnesses Joh: Winkler [Minkler?] and his wife. John J. died aft 1809.

Born Johannes Schmidt, called later in life John Smith. His wife has been mentioned as Geertje Williams, also as Anna Bartel, but they married other John Smiths.

John Smith’s farm, called the “Christie” farm, adjoined his father’s farm which his brother Killian Smith continued to occupy.

Johannes Schmidt & Elizabeth were witnesses at the 18 Apr 1770 baptism at Churchtown for Magdalena, dau. of Wilm & Anna Deinhard.
Johannis Smith & Polly Van Tessel were witnesses at the 1789 baptism of William, son of James Conklin & Cathrina Taylor.
Johannes Smit and Pally Van Dassen were witnesses at the 5 Feb 1794 baptism of Catharine (b. 28 Nov 1793), daughter of Cornelius Conklin [Polly’s cousin] and Lena Hilicer.
John J. Smith and Polly Van Tassel were witnesses of the 1803 baptism of their grandson John Race.
Hans and Elisabeth were witnesses at the 1809 baptism of Barbel Jung, daughter of Christian Jung and Barbel Schmidt.

According to the legal papers concerning Mary’s deceased brother, Cornelius Van Tassel, John and Mary Smith were living in Mount Pleasant in January 1790. The following census record could be for this John Smith, but there are no children listed, so it’s probably for some other John Smith.

51786. Cornelis Van Tassel. Born in 1756. Cornelis was baptized in Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church, on 24 Aug 1756.157 Cornelis, son of Jacobus Van Thexel & Eliezabeth his wife, witnesses Cornelis Van Thexel & Weyntie his wife. Cornelis died on 10 May 1790.410

From the Genealogy of the Van Texel–Van Tassel Family:291
    Cornelius was a Revolutionary soldier. He enlisted March 24, 1777, in the 6th company. Captain Jacob Wright, 2nd Regiment of the Line, Col. Philip Van Cortlandt. He died in the service. His sister, Sarah Vander Werken, May 10, 1790, filed a claim for bounty land in the right of her deceased brother. Vol. 48, Land Papers, Albany, N.Y. Lieutenant Augustus Sackett was appointed administrator of his estate.
Extract from Onondaga County Records:
    Cornelius Van Tassel, intestate, before January 2, 1790—Legatees were John and Mary Smith of Mount Pleasant, N.Y. Isaac Van Tassel deposes that Mary Van Tassel now Mary Smith, sister and only heir now living of Cornelius Van Tassel.
    June 9. 1792, Sarah Hamilton of Saratoga County, N.Y. sister and heir of Cornelius Van Tassel transfers her claim. N.Y. Gen. and Bio. Record January 1902.
