WILLIAM H. SIMONS. --- William H. Simons was born in the state of New York in the year 1820, and lived in that state until 1843. In the year 1840 he was married and the wife of his youth now survives him. In 1843 he moved with his family to Michigan, buying a farm in the town of Iosco in Livingston county, living there for 19 years. He was a mechanic and farmer, working a portion of the time at the carpenters trade. Some 40 years ago he united with the Protestant Methodist church and for a good many years was a local preacher in that denomination. In 1861 he moved to Shiawassee County, settling on a farm in the town of Bennington. He remained there tending his farm and working at his trade until about 1886, when he moved to the village of Morrice, where he died May, 1894.

“On April 4, 1803, the original military township of Tully, No. 14, including the present towns of Tully, Preble and Scott and portions of Spafford and Otisco, was given independent privileges as a civil town bearing the same name, and on the 8th of April, 1808, Fabius was reduced to its present limits by the formation of Cortland county, which took off nearly all of the towns of Truxton and Cuyler. In 1810 the territory under consideration contained about 1,900 inhabitants. Its settlement during the first decade of this century was very rapid. Joseph Simons had opened a second tavern near the center of the town and Colonel St. John started a third at Apulia.” History of the Towns of Fabius (www.usgenweb NY rootsweb) Dwight H. Reuben Simons was not mentioned in the will or the papers recorded after the will.

As both William & Angeline Simons and Reuben & Martha Simons had land on lot 14 and sold it to the same R. House (who only appears in one other land transaction and that’s to buy land in lot 14 from Christopher & Catherine Wolfe), it’s almost certain that William and Reuben Simons were closely related. Reuben was listed in the 1830 and 1840 censuses for Manlius, and from those, he was born between 1780 and 1790, so he was from a generation earlier than William such as a father or uncle would be.
