Richard and Josephine (Fillibeck) Schirado
Richard and my retirement was of an unexpected nature. After accomplishing our last big project of building our dream home, we moved into Glen Ullin (511 Oak Ave.) in the spring of 1979.
Richard kept very busy as a self-employed saw sharpener, whetting every kind of blade brought ot him. He also operated a fix—it furniture and repair service. Slowly he allowed himself to go fishing and before long he became addicted like all fishermen. He and his brother Harry spent many long hours together fishing a Lake Tschida. When the weather didn’t permit that hobby, wood carving tools replaced the fishing pole. His hands were always busy until his health began to fail.
Richard endured a heart attack in 1980 and one surgery after another was followed by a stroke in 1994, and congestive heart failure. After an extended hospital stay at St. A’s in 2004, he was transferred to the mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He was then sent back to St. A’s and eventually to Manor Health Care Center for a time before returning home where our daughter, Shelly, helped care for him for 2 ½ years. He was also on Hospice during part of that time. In the summer of 2006, he was readmitted to the Manor Health Care Center where he passed away on June 26, 2007.

Obituary Bismarck Tribune, Sept. 14, 2012. GLEN ULLIN — Josephine Schirado, 91, Glen Ullin, died Sept. 12, 2014. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Jeffrey Zwack officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Glen Ullin.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin, where a vigil/rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Josephine Therisa (Filibeck) “Josie” Schirado was born March 19, 1923, in Glen Ullin, the eighth of 11 children born to John and Margaret (Fetter) Filibeck. She grew up on the family farm (now the Ray/Rick Filibeck farm) east of Glen Ullin. Josephine attended local schools including Dickinson State College where she earned a teaching certificate. On Aug. 29, 1944, she married Richard Schirado, the love of her life. The couple made their home on the Katie Schirado home north of Glen Ullin until 1979 when they built a home in Glen Ullin and moved from the farm.
Richard and Josie were blessed with seven children, Judie (Phil) Miller, Lila (James) Dixon, SanDee (Howard) Wehri, Dick (Deb) Schirado, Shelly Schirado, Gaylen (Tammy) Schirado, and Carmen (Pat) Arhur. Josie taught locally for a short time before and after her marriage. Her involvement in church and community activities was a testament to her love for life and dedication to her faith. She was involved in Christian Mothers in Haymarsh and Glen Ullin and served as president in both organizations for many years. She taught CCD at Sacred Heart in Glen Ullin and was also involved in church choir and bible group and served as eucharistic minister and lector. In 1982, the Richard Schirado family was chosen by the Knights of Columbus as the family of the year.
Josie not only lived her faith, but her faith and love for God were her identity. Always a teacher at heart, she never missed a “teachable moment” to creatively demonstrate a life lesson. To those who knew her well, she was fondly called the “Gadget Lady,” finding ways to simplify her work. She loved to garden and was known for the bread and strudel she made, as well as her homemade salad dressing. Her love for adventure and insatiable curiosity and eagerness to learn and try new ideas remained with her throughout her 91 years, as did her delightful and contagious sense of humor. Having an incredible gift of hospitality, friends and family always felt at home at Josie’s and were invited to “stay for dinner.”
She was an avid entertainer with her many games and puzzles to occupy guests and visitors. Not one to hold a grudge, Josie was quick to forgive and seek forgiveness from anyone she might have harmed. She embodied strength and gentleness.
Josie died on Sept. 12, 2014, surrounded by her children whom she dearly loved and who will miss her. She left behind 17 grandchildren who share many moments and fond memories of their beloved “Gramma Jo” and 23 great-grandchildren.
Among those who welcomed her on the other side were her husband, Richard; her parents; her 10 siblings, Rose Rausch, Nick, Martin, Agnes Gietzen, Ray, Johnny, Margaret Geck, Paul, Bob, and Darlene Tibor; and two infant grandchildren.
