Big Penn Yan Warehouse Damaged by $30,000 Fire
Penn Yan, July 14–A spectacular fire in the Barden & Robeson Basket warehouse last evening attracted the attention of the countryside and did damage amounting to $30,000 before it was under control. The L-shaped warehouse, consisting of two buildings, one 112 fee square and another 48 x 112 feet, each one story in height, was packed with finished baskets, lacings, cut stock and raw material burned rapidly.
The fire was discovered at 8:20 p.m. and in two hours had burned itself out. During that interval the bright light had attracted thousands to the scene and the north road leading to Benton was blocked with cars. The fire company was early on the scene and their effors were augmented by volunteers from Geneva, Rushville and Gorham who were attracted by the bright glow and came to render assistance.
    [several paragraphs omitted]
Of the several firemen temporarily overcome by heat and smoke, only Glennis Race, 21, of Penn Yan department, required medical attention. He also was burned about the hands.
