    Samuel, son of William and Rebecca Butter, was a resident of Goshen, now Wilmington, and took an early interest in the welfare of that part of Woburn, being one of the petitioners for the adjustment of church matters in 1725, and July 18, 1728, he was one of the petitioners for a division of the town of Woburn. He carried on the business of a saw-mill in connection with farming, and acquired during his life a large part of timbered lands, especially the cedar swamps, Lebanon and Ladder Pole. In 1743 he purchased the interest of Mr. James Baldwin in lands and saw-mill. He lived in the house ... known as the Garrison House. Samuel, with his brother William, were executors of his father’s estate.

    The bequests of estate were principally as follows: Joshua Simonds took the trust of executor to the will of Samuel Butter, late of Wilmington, December 4, 1788, and which was written March 1, 1774, making the following bequests:
    To sons Samuel and Reuben, deeds of sale part of real estate, partly as portion and for the payment of just debts, and for a maintenance for himself and wife and for their funeral charges, for which bonds of said Samuel and Reuben were taken. Also a bequest to son Samuel of about seven acres of land near meeting-house. A right in Ladder Pole and half of a pew in meeting-house.
    Bequest to son Reuben, a piece of meadow near Flagg’s bridge and half of pew in meeting-house. Bequest to son John Butter and his heirs, a piece of meadow about 1 1/2 acres on the south side of Clear Meadow brook; also Woodward lot of about eight and twenty acres; also all my land lying between my sons Samuel and Reuben, with buildings thereon standing, excepting place for water at the pond for creatures. My will is that my wearing apparel be equally divided between my three sons. Bequest to daughter Sarah Stanley and her heirs, the sum of five pounds, to be paid in three years after my decease and my wife's decease, by son Samuel. Bequest to daughter Rebecca Beard and her heirs, the sum of five pounds, to be paid in three years after my decease and my wife’s decease, by son Reuben. Bequest to daughter Mary Buck and her heirs, the sum of five pounds, to be paid in three years after my decease and my wife's decease, by son John, My will is that my three daughters above named and their heirs should have my indoor or household stuff after my decease and my wife’s decease, to be equally divided among them.
    My will is if I own my oxen at my decease they shall become the property of my sons, Samuel and Reuben and their heirs. If I shall leave any other live stock after my decease and my wife’s decease, my will is they shall be equally divided among all my children and their heirs, and I do appoint Joshua Simonds, of Medford, to be sole executor of this my last will and testament.
