38477. Enos Jones. Born on 31 May 1734 in Sutton, MA.566 Enos died in Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont, on 15 Aug 1803; he was 69.574 Buried in Hitchcock Cemetery, West Haven.

From Elbert Smith’s Descendants of Joel Jones:102
Enos Jones moved from Charlton, Mass. to Lanesborough, in the extreme western part of the state, in 1768. Enos Jones briefly states that he died Aug. 15, 1803, and that he was drowned while swimming after ducks that had been shot. He had moved from Lanesborough prior to 1790, and we do not know certainly where he died, but believe it was near Castleton, Vermont, which is about 15 miles from Whitehall, N.Y. He was a soldier of the Revolution, and his record is given in full in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, volume 8, page 917. From this it appears that he served for twenty-seven days in September 1777, and that he enlisted again March 17, 1781, and served to Feb., 1782, when he was mustered out.
The description of him as given at this time in the record was:–“Age 46 years; Stature 5 ft. 7 inches; Complection, light; hair, brown; occupation, laborer; residence Lanesborough.” His record as a soldier seems to be clean and honorable. Our information about Enos Jones is very scanty indeed. If some member of the family could supply additional facts they weould be thankfully received.

The History of the town of Lanesborough,628 lists names of Revolutionary soldiers: Daniel Jones, Ephraim Jones, Enos Jones, another Daniel Jones, Joel Jones, and Samuel Jones.

On 7 Mar 1758 when Enos was 23, he first married Amplias Wadsworth (41933) , daughter of Samuel Wadsworth (23480) (Jan 1712-ca 1752) & Mary Granger (22093) (25 Oct 1713-29 May 1785), in Suffield Congregational Church.584 Born on 7 Jun 1738 in Coventry, CT.629 Amplias died in Lanesborough, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, on 28 Jun 1785; she was 47.574

From Joel Jones’ Record Book as recorded in Elbert Smith’s Descendants of Joel Jones:102
“June the 28th 1785 mother expired this life.”

From Elbert Smith’s Descendants of Joel Jones:102
Enos Jones married in 1758 Amplias Wadsworth, daughter of Asael Wadsworth. It is said that her mother’s maiden name was Amplias Cooper, but for this we have no very definite authority. We have practically no data regarding Amplias Wadsworth Jones.

Comments: Enos and Amplias were, indeed, married in 1758 in the Suffield Congregational Church. Her sister Clemence married Seth Pomeroy there in 1755. Also, after her father died, her mother Mary (Granger) Wadsworth married there Timothy Cooper 1762, so her mother’s name was Cooper, not her maiden name, but her second married name. The name Amplias is unusual. There are few men named Amplias and even fewer women with that name.

From Elbert Smith’s Descendants of Joel Jones:102
Rev. R.C. Smith, who was unusually well informed, remembered hearing his grandmother Rhoda Sprague Jones say that Enos Jones had 16 children by his first wife, and five by his second wife, 21 in all. We do not have the names and birth dates of more than eight, and do not know how many lived to reach maturity.
