    Benjamin Lincoln was a constable in 1754, selectman 1765 to 1771 inclusive, and elected town-clerk in 1757. He was a deacon in the First Church in Hingham, and representative in 1773, 1774, 1775, 1778 and 1789. He also in 1774 and 1775 represented the town in the Provincial Congress. In July, 1755, he was appointed Adjutant of the 3rd Regiment in Suffolk County; in June, 1763, Major, and in 1772, Lieut.-Colonel. He was a Major-General in the army of the Revolution, and after the campaign of 1777, commanded the right wing of General Gates’ Army; was in the battles of Charlestown , S.C., Yorktown, Va., etc., and 8 Oct.. 1777, was badly wounded in his leg. He was chosen Secretary of War in 1781, and in 1787 was elected Lieut. Governor of Massachusetts. On behalf of the U. S. Government he was sent in 1789, to treat with the Southern Indians; and later was in command of the forces sent to suppress the Western Insurrection (Shay’s Rebellion). From 1789 to March, 1809, he was collector of the Port of Boston. He was also President of the Society of the Cincinnati. At his funeral his pall was borne by the Hon. John Adams, Hon. R.T. Paine, Hon. Richard Cranch, Hon. Cotton Tufts, His Honor Lieut. Governor Cobb and Thomas Melleville, Esq. The bells in Boston and other places were tolled for an hour.
