Caleb, freeman 1671, had lands at Medford 1675, he also held mortgages.45

    Joseph, probably came to Hingham with his parents, 1653, and m. here [Hingham], Dec. 30, 1660, Mary, dau. of John Tucker. This fam. removed from Hing. soon after the birth of the youngest dau., as will be seen by the following: ‘May 26, 1679, Joseph Church late of Hing. 'carpenter', and Mary his wife in consideration of £114, sells to John Norton, pastor of the Church of Christ in Hingham all those their three lots of land which Richard Church, father of the said Joseph, formerly purchased of Ensign John Thaxter, with the dwelling-house, barns and orchards standing upon the said land,’etc. (S.R. Vol. II. p. 232). Constable, 1672.

Joseph and Mary moved from Hingham to Little Compton in 1679.299

9075. Capt. Benjamin Church. Born ca 1640 in Plymouth, MA.31 Benjamin died in Freetown, MA on 17 Jan 1718.317,271 Occupation: carpenter.

Benjamin was the first ‘Englishman’ to settle at Little Compton in 1675. He was a hero in King’s Philip’s War. He was involved early on in the war at Pease Field Fight in Jun 1675, later in the massacre at the Great Swamp in Dec 1675, and he lead the expedition that resulted in King Philip’s capture in Aug 1676. For a popular introduction to King Phililp’s War including Benjamin’s involvement and excerpts from his diary, see King Philip’s War: the history and legacy of America’s forgotten conflict, by Eric B. Schultz and Michael J. Tougias, Countryman Press, Woodstock, VT, 1999.

Benjamin dictated to his son Thomas his story published in 1716 as Entertaining Passages Relating to Philip’s War. Various editions have been published including The History of Philip’s War, Commonly Called the Great Indian War of 1675 and 1676, edited by Samuel Drake in 1829 and reprinted in 1989 by Heritage Book, Bowie, MD. See also the Diary of King Philip’s War, 1675-76, with an introduction by Alan Simpson and Mary Simpson, Lockwood, Tiverton, RI, 1975.

Col. Benjamin Church, Esq., and his wife Alice, both from Bristol, were admitted to the United Congregational Church in Little Compton March 1716/7.314

“Nathaniel Church was born in Plymouth or Duxbury, and the youngest brother of Col. Benjamin the warrior. He was in Scituate 1666. His farm was laid out on the North river, south of Cornet Stetson’s, including the bald hills. His house stood near the river, opposite nearly to Job’s landing.”53

On 3 Mar 1662/3 Nathaniel Church and Elizabeth Soule were fined for committing fornication with each other. On 5 Oct 1663 Elizabeth Soule sued Nathaniel Church for committing fornication and denying to marry her. She was awarded £10.299
Ca 1666 Nathaniel married Sarah Barstow (3180) , daughter of William Barstow (1293) (ca 1612-1 Jan 1668/9) & Anna Hubbard (1507) (ca 1614-aft 23 Jun 1674), in Scituate, MA.16 Born ca 1645. Sarah was baptized in Hingham, MA, in Dec 1645.14 Sarah died aft 4 Nov 1717.298
