Born say 1647. John died in Little Compton, RI on 21 Feb 1717.314

    In 1667 he appears on the treasurer's book as due by rates to the Colony £OO.09.00. He served on "Corrowners jury" in 1673; was constable for Duxbury in 1677; in 1679 was one of a committee to lay out a highway; in 1686 was summoned to serve on the jury, but neglecting to appear, was fined 10s.; was deputy to the General Court for Duxbury in 1689 and 1691. Res. Duxbury, where his children were born.

On 26 Dec 1667 Alice married Capt. Benjamin Church (9075) , son of Richard Church (ca 1608-27 Dec 1668) & Elizabeth Warren (3080) (ca 1616-9 Mar 1669/70).299 Born ca 1640 in Plymouth, MA.31 Benjamin died in Freetown, MA on 17 Jan 1718.317,271 Occupation: carpenter.

Benjamin was the first ‘Englishman’ to settle at Little Compton in 1675. He was a hero in King’s Philip’s War. He was involved early on in the war at Pease Field Fight in Jun 1675, later in the massacre at the Great Swamp in Dec 1675, and he lead the expedition that resulted in King Philip’s capture in Aug 1676. For a popular introduction to King Phililp’s War including Benjamin’s involvement and excerpts from his diary, see King Philip’s War: the history and legacy of America’s forgotten conflict, by Eric B. Schultz and Michael J. Tougias, Countryman Press, Woodstock, VT, 1999.

Benjamin dictated to his son Thomas his story published in 1716 as Entertaining Passages Relating to Philip’s War. Various editions have been published including The History of Philip’s War, Commonly Called the Great Indian War of 1675 and 1676, edited by Samuel Drake in 1829 and reprinted in 1989 by Heritage Book, Bowie, MD.
