31501. John Neal. Born on 7 Nov 1705 in Scituate, MA.52 At the age of 6, John was baptized in First Parish Church of Scituate, on 6 Jul 1712.52 Occupation: farmer, shipwright.

John was Judge William Cushing’s farmer who managed the Walnut Tree Hill farm in his absence and built the ‘Neal Gate’ that gave its name to the present road, then a private way to the old Cushing farm, and the Briggs shipyard, in 1778, as recorded in the Judge’s so-called ‘diary.’ John Neal later became a shipwright, and removed to Duxbury.52

31502. Joseph Neal. Born on 29 Sep 1707 in Scituate, MA.52 At the age of 4, Joseph was baptized in First Parish Church of Scituate, on 6 Jul 1712.52 Joseph died in Hanover, MA ca 1749.

The baptism record of Joseph’s daughter Lydia, 7 May 1749: “Lydia, daughter of Alice Neal, relict of Joseph Neal, who was killed ye fall preceeding by a loaden cart going over him.”446

John was born at the home near Stony Cover Brook, which he inherited after his father’s death, and there he resided until his death. He was a shipbuilder with his brother James at the Hobart shipyard on North River. In 1780 he was a Constable authorized to enforce collection of the First Paper Currency Tax of 1780.42
