Matthew served in Capt. Amos Hitchcock’s Militia Co. for the defence of Fort William Henry, 1757, and went to Fort Edward with Major Hubbard. It should be noted that he had a cousin Matthew, born in 1711, to whom the above service may belong, but it is more likely that it pertains to the younger man; it was the cousin’s wife who died 24 Dec. 1780, and not the second wife of our Matthew.6

Administration on Matthew’s estate was granted, 3 Aug 1795, to his widow Phebe. Distribution to widow, only son Daniel, Mary Blakslee and Sarah Gilbert.
In Jul 1747 Matthew first married Bethia Todd (45442) , daughter of Caleb Todd (53086) (2 Feb 1700[/1]-5 Jul 1731) & Mary Ives (26281) (5 Dec 1706-), in New Haven, CT.56 Born on 7 Aug 1730 in New Haven, CT.56 Bethia died in New Haven, CT, on 21 Jul 1750; she was 19.56

Samuel practised medicine in the Hamden section of New Haven for many years. His will, dated 5 July 1780, proved Sep 1782, mentions wife Esther; sons Daniel and Solomon; daughters Sarah Warner, Deborah, Hannah, Philonela, Martha, and Rachel; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Wooding; three grandchildren, Abner, Elizabeth and Damaris. Executors, Samuel Cooper, Jr., and son Daniei Wooding.6
38239. Capt. John Gilbert. Born ca 1729 in New Haven, CT.55 John died in New Haven, CT on 5 Jul 1779.55

John was commissioned Ensign of the 17th Co., 2nd Regt., Oct 1771; Lieut. of the same, Oct 1774; and Capt. of the same, May 1775. In Dec 1776 he was appointed 1st Lieut. of Volunteers raised in New Haven. In Aug 1778 he was permitted to transport by land 50 bushels of home-manufactured salt to New York State to exchange for flour needed by the salt manufacturers and other inhabitants of New Haven. During Tryon’s Invasion of New Haven, he was shot through the knee, and appears to have been dispatched with a club, as his head was very much bruised, and a bloody club lay upon him. He was commanding officer of the 17th Co., 2nd Regt. of Militia, 1779.6

Administration on Capt. John’s estate was granted 2 Sep 1779 to Silas Hotchkiss in right of his wife Esther, daughter to the deceased. Distribution: eldest son Jesse; Eber, Esther, Lydia, Bethia, Martha, Mary, and Marium. Bethiah chose Silas Hotchkiss for guardian; and in 1784 Eber and Martha chose Jesse Gilbert for guardian.6
On 22 May 1755 John married Lydia Ives (26288) , daughter of Ebenezer Ives (10382) (6 Apr 1692-7 Jul 1759) & Mary Atwater (12 Mar 1694/5-13 Feb 1772), in New Haven, CT.56 Born on 2 Oct 1733 in New Haven, CT.56 Lydia died in New Haven, CT, on 15 Dec 1778; she was 45.55

Caleb served in the French and Indian War, Sep to Dec 1755 in the 7th Co., 2nd Regt.; Apr to Dec 1756 in the 1st Co., 3rd Regt.; Mar to Nov 1757 in the 2nd Co., Col. Lyman's Regt.; and Mar to Nov 1758 as Sergt. in the 1st Co., 2nd Regt. In the Revolutionary War, he was Capt. in the 2nd Militia Regt.6

Administration on Caleb’s estate was granted 3 Aug 1801 to his widow Eunice and son Eldad. Mutual agreement of the heirs, 26 Oct 1810: Widow Eunice Gilbert, the daughter Ennice Goodsell, the danghter Anne Thomas and Asa Thomas her husband, and Eldad Gilbert.6
On 18 Oct 1764 Caleb married Eunice Bassett (26395) , daughter of Amos Bassett (10410) (19 Feb 1697/8-1751) & Mary Gilbert (26278) (2 Mar 1704-), in Second Congregational Society, New Haven.56,55 Born 10 Mar 1731/2 in New Haven, CT.56 Eunice died in New Haven, CT on 4 Jan 1824.56

Michael served in the French and Indian War, from Sep to Dec 1755 in the 7th Co., 2nd Regt.; Apr to Nov 1757 in the 2nd Co., Col. Lyman's Regt.; from Mar to Nov 1758 in the 1st Co., 2nd Regt, and in the same company in 1759. He was killed while resisting Tryon’s Invasion of New Haven. Administration on Michael’s estate was granted Oct 1779 to his widow “Betha.” Distribution made to the widow, Naomey, Tryphene, and Rhoda.6
On 26 Apr 1759 Michael married Betty Potter (45420) , daughter of Joseph Potter (26236) (15 Mar 1702-1743) & Thankful Bradley (53057) (17 Mar 1704-4 Nov 1789), in Second Congregational Society, New Haven.55 Born ca 1739.55 Betty died in Hamden, CT on 4 Feb 1799.55 Buried in Hamden Plains Cemetery, Highwood.
