28578. Mercy Otis. Born on 12 Dec 1700 in Scituate, MA.52 Mercy died in Scituate, MA, on 15 Jan 1761; she was 60.52 Buried in South Parish Cemetery, Norwell.
On 5 Nov 1724 when Mercy was 23, she married Capt. John Clap (31395) , son of Dea. Stephen Clap (25444) (4 Mar 1670-11 Dec 1756) & Temperance Gorham (14131) (2 Aug 1678-3 Dec 1768), in Scituate, MA.52 Born on 14 Oct 1697 in Scituate, MA.52 John was baptized in the Second Church of Scituate, in 1701.52 John died in Scituate, MA, on 24 May 1769; he was 71.52 Buried in South Parish Cemetery, Norwell.

John was an officer in the French War.42

John died age 79 according to his gravestone, and if that’s correct, then he was born about 1690 and was not the son of Stephen and Temperance (Gorham) Clap.

From The Clapp Memorial:310
John, the eldest son of Stephen and wife Temperance Clapp, was born Oct. 14, 1697. He was a Captain, and there is a grave-stone in Scituate burying-ground, which says Capt, John Clapp died Jan. 24, 1762, in the 72d year of his age. If this was the John referred to, there must be an error somewhere. He married, Nov. 5, 1724, Mercy Otis; there was a Mercy, wife of Capt. John Clapp, who died Jan. 15, 1761, in the 61st year of her age.

From L. Vernon Brigg’s Briggs Family:42
Job lived first in Hanover, near Circuit St., in the Drinkwater section, where he was a member of the church in 1728/29. He inherited the farm on which his father resided, described as ‘on both sides of the road being about 60 acres with the buildings & my three acres at Buck’s field & my seven acres of salt marsh on the east & west side of Damon’s creek next the beach, also my 30 acres of woodland cedar swamp near the mill brook also about 60 acres of uplande meadow which I bought of William Ticknor and others joyning to Scituate harbour also about one hundred acres of land which I bought of Thomas Clark and others with the buildings on both sides of the way at a Place called the Clay pits.’ The will of Job Otis of Scituate, yeoman, dated 12 Dec. 1781, names wife Prince; dau. Eunice; sons Job, David, Prince and Abijah; daus. Mercy Curtis, Thankful Otis, Betty Sutton and Deborah Vinal.

The births of Job’s children by his second wife do not seem to be recorded anywhere.
On 16 Feb 1726 when Job was 23, he first married Thankful Otis (26755) , daughter of Capt. Stephen Otis (12020) (1661-26 Aug 1733) & Hannah Ensign (10705) (ca 1670-1 May 1729), in First Parish Church of Scituate.110 Born ca 1702 in Scituate, MA. Thankful died in Scituate, MA on 4 Aug 1739.52 Buried in Church Hill Cemetery, Norwell.

Job second married Prince Howland (14048) , daughter of Prince Howland (4839) (-ca 1713) & Deborah Barker (23857) (7 Dec 1686-). Born on 3 Oct 1713 in Marshfield, MA.

According to the Pembroke Friends records,
Alce Howland, the daughter of Prince Howland and Debrow Houland was born ye 30th of ye 8th month
Prince Howland dafter of Prince Howland of Marshfield and Deebrah his wie borne ye third day of ye eight month 1713

Mark Storey in an email of 3 Sep 2013 gives a convincing argument that Job Otis’s wife, named Prince in his will, was Prince Howland born 1713. They were probably married in the St. Andrews Episcopal church of which Job was a member, but that church’s records from 1730 through 1780 no longer survive.

From Deane’s History of Scituate:53
Benjamin was the 2d. regularly bred physician, who settled in Scituate [Dr. Isaac Otis having been the first42]. He was educated under Dr. Bulfinch, of Boston, and succeeded to the Stockbridge Mansion. There is undoubted testimony, that he was the great physician of his day. His account books exhibit sufficient evidence, that he was a consulting physician in difficult cases, in a circle, embracing the whhole country from Falmouth to Worcester, and to Ipswich. He is remembered by a few aged people [in 1831], as having held the reputation of the first physician of the time, and not the reputation of quackery, but that of an enlightened benefactor to mankind. (Dr. Benjamin educated many young gentlemen in Medicine, from Boston, and other towns, amongst whom we may name the distinguished Dr. Isaac Winslow of Marshfield, who married his daughter.) He is described as a gentleman of wit and taste, eminently pleasing in his own hospitable mansion, and the delight of literary society: and we may add, that he had made attainments in the science of music which were rare at that time.

Benjamin was vestryman for 29 years at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Scituate.239
