Born on 29 Aug 1874 in Lee Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. Harriet Cordelia died in Royal Oak, Oakland County, Michigan, on 10 May 1952; she was 77. Buried in Olivet City Cemetery.

Harriet, known as Hattie, Van Geison. She married Frank Herrick 18 years after her older sister Mary Alice married Frank’s uncle Benjamin Pinch.

Hattie was three years old when her father died. She was the youngest and the older boys were gone. Hattie's mother wove rugs to make money.

OLIVET PRISCILLA CLUB HOLDS MONTHLY MEETING
Olivet, April 13. — A jolly party, composed of 20 members of the Modern Priscilla club, motored to Lansing Tuesday to spend the day with Mrs. Ellsworth Long of St. Joseph street, who is a former member of the organization. A potluck dinner was served at noon, after which a brief business meeting took place, as this was the regular April meeting of the club. This was followed by a pleasant social hour, and the house recently built by the Longs was inspected. Inquiries for old friends were answered and adieus said, and the company adjourned, with memories of a pleasant occasion. The members of the April committee were Mrs. Hattie Herrick, Mrs. Herman Winner, Mrs. Laura Sloan and Mrs. Cora Fulkerson.

OLIVET - Mrs. Hattie C. Herrick, 77, of 120 Washington avenue, lifelong Olivet resident, died Sunday morning at the home of a son, George Herrick, in Royal Oak, following a long illness. She was born Aug. 29, 1874, in Calhoun county, daughter of John and Harriet (Rathburn) VanGieson, and was the widow of Frank H. Herrick, who died in Olivet, April 29, 1924. Mrs. Herrick was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a life member of the Past Matrons club and a member of the First Congregational church. Surviving besides the son George are two other sons, Mearle of Linden and Leo of East Lansing: a daughter, Mrs. Leo Schirado of Lansing; two sisters, Mrs. Wm Fisher of 18 Cliff, Battle Creek, and Mrs. Luella Gifford of Mason; 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church, with burial in Olivet cemetery. The body is at the Bulkhead funeral home.

Plan Memorial Service
The Independent Order of Oddfellows of this city of which there are nine branches will observe their memorial services, Sunday June 13th. The parade led by a band will leave McCamly street promptly at 2:30, and will march to the cemetery. The Rebecca branches have chartered a street car to convey the sisters to the Newark street entrance of the cemetery. This car will leave McCamly street at 2:15 p.m. Columbia Lodge No. 272 and Columbia Rebecca Lodge 297 will have charge of the ceremonies at the cemetery. In the evening the services will be at the Presbyterian church, members attending in a body. Carl Herrick has been selected as Marshall of the day. Every Oddfellow of the city is earnestly requested to turn out for this occasion.

Whist Club Entertained.
    Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Herrick entertained the members of the Whist club Saturday evening at their home 93 Grenville street. Cards were played at three tables. This group of players have been meeting every two weeks during the season. a record of the high score is kept and at the close of the season a grand prize will be awarded. After the games, Oakley Herrick, son of the host and hostess, entertained the company with vocal and instrumental music. A two-course lunch was served by the hostess.

All were born in Michigan. Clyde and Flo were living in the same house in 1935, but Theral was living in Marshall.

In 1944, Clhyde and Flo lived in a home on Main Street previously occupied by the Benjamin and Hannah Follett family from Connecticut. This house had the first door bell in Olivet. While Clyde and Flo were on vacation, Theral Herrick occupied the house.720

Clyde worked with his brother Frank in the meat business from 1902 to 1910.720

Clyde purchased a barber business from Charley Montague in 1910. It continued through 1920.720
For many years a shave was ten cents, a haircut was twenty-five cents, and a massage was ten cents. World War I put Clyde out of the barber business. During retirement, Clyde barbered for the long-time local barber, Henry Colestock, when there were busy periods.721

Clyde started a dry goods and men’s furnishings business in the former Storr Building during 1920. This business was moved to the old Blanchard building next to the Olivet State Bank in 1938 where it was known at the “Herrick’s Community Shoppe.”720
The Shoppe was sold to a man named Vodelreuters from Marshall, Michigan in 1954.721
The store’s first location in 1920 was next to the College Inn, until it was moved in 1938.721
On 22 Feb 1905 when Clyde Melvin was 21, he married Flo A. Campbell, daughter of George Campbell (Apr 1848-) & Mary E. (Aug 1870-), in Olivet, Eaton County, Michigan. Born on 28 Jun 1882 in Olivet, Eaton County, Michigan. Flo A. died in Springfield, Calhoun County, Michigan, on 24 Aug 1983; she was 101. Buried in Olivet City Cemetery.

Flo, or Flora, Campbell. Flo washed towels for Clyde’s barber business every day.721
